It is one of the strongest known acids, and the strongest Bronstedt acid available at industrial scale.
It is commonly used as a catalyst for many organic synthesis reactions - such as alkylation, esterification, etherification, acylation, isomerization, ethoxylation, cyclization, cationic rearrangement and more - and in cationic polymerization. It is also used for electronic applications such as liquid crystals and batteries, and chemical and pharmaceutical applications as sythesis intermediate.
