Phenylmagnesium bromide is used in the Grignard reaction as an organomagnesium reagent, which is an important step in the synthesis of (S)-2(diphenylmethyl)pyrrolidine. It can also form the cross-coupled product when undergoing palladium-catalyzed Grignard coupling with alkyl chlorides. It is used to prepare phenyl aryl sulphides, sulphoxides, and sulphones.

It can act as a strong or Lewis acid, and is involved in the synthesis of end-functionalized regioregular poly(3-alkylthiophene)s, 1,3,3-trimethyl-6-phenyl-2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-6-ol, o-substituted benzophenones and 6-benzyl-1,3,3-trimethyl-2-oxabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-6-ol.
