FAD's fluoroscence can be used to study energy-dependent intramitochondrial redox potential. As a coenzyme form of vitamin B2, it is commonly used in conditions presenting a vitamin B2 deficiency.
It can be used as a redox cofactor by flavoproteins such as:

- α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase
