6-Chloro-3-indolyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside (CAS Number: 138182-21-5) is a compound commonly used as a substrate for cell analysis.
It yields a rose-coloured precipitate, which is why it is referred to as Salmon-Gal. It can be used as an enzyme substrate in diagnostic reagents. 6-Chloro-3-indolyl-beta-D-galactopyranoside is often used together with IPTG to derect beta-galactopyranoside activity in bacterial colonies. It is helpful to detect recombinants from non-recombinants, as it makes recombinants appear as salmon-coloured and non-recombinants as white. Nitroblue Tetrazolium Salt (NBT) can speed up this process yielding fast and clear results.
It can be used in conjuction with X-Glu (5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-beta-D-glucoside) for the detection of GUS and Lac activities on the same plate.
