1,3-Benzodioxole-5,6-diamine dihydrochloride is a fluorescent tag, typically used for the derivitisation of α-keto acids and sialic acids for detection by fluorescence HPLC. While many natural compounds exhibit fluorescence, solutions that do not (or fluoresce weakly) can still be analysed by fluorescence HPLC by adding a fluorescent tag such as 1,3-benzodioxole-5,6-diamine dihydrochloride. Fluorescent detectors are particularly useful for analysing pharmaceutical, clinical and petroleum-based samples where typical UV detection may not be sufficient.[1,2]
